Strangers In-Between Worlds

There are some of you, some of us, who pause from time to time and realize that we’re living in the space of “in-between worlds.”

Despite being surrounded by family and friends, colleagues, and well met strangers, despite belonging to organizations and affiliations, we still feel “in transition.”

Floating. Like ghosts that manifest in and out of our reality.

Like finding ourselves in the middle of a long trek along forest trails, or along river gorges, then suddenly realizing that we have been traveling alone for quite some time now.

Sounds get muted and time seemed to be as thick as muddy waters. We then become dreamwalkers  on a hazy, summer day.

Like strangers in the night, you, we, find ourselves between the world of shifting lights, and a shadowy inner world. And you wonder, “do you, we, even truly belong?”

We are here yet not here. Present and detached.

Engaged and observing. Fully immersed yet hovering above, or observing at the side.

Helping, caring, loving, and holding back. Afraid to be seen as vulnerable, thus, putting on a mask of courage beyond measure.

Attending to the needs of others more than your own needs. Together, these became your shield.

Finding solace in silent places; temples of worship and sacred places, usually found in the cathedral of the great outdoors.

Finding solitude’s comfort despite being surrounded by a sea of voices.

Eventually, you become comfortable being a stranger in one’s own skin;

embracing different worlds, across multi-dimensions of time and space.

A wanderer, you don’t measure love through the passing of time, but rather, on how much you have done for your loved ones – family, friends, and significant others.

At the edges of reality, where the natives of the in-between worlds walk lightly, you, we, finally realize that life and love are not a one-way, linear affair.

That the act of giving needs to be balanced with the grace of accepting, wherever we find such sacred acts of living.

For doing so enacts the ancient law of the hearts, as old as man’s first conscious thoughts.

That “home” is an ever-shifting space in the sands of time,

and can be found whenever and wherever our soul finds its voice.

Softly, along with the sighing  of the evening winds, we say, “here is where the beating of my heart resides.”
